unpopular opinion: most of what gets said here about discontinuation is guesswork

Results Sourced ×4 Slow Clap ×3 The Quiet One ×3

Something I keep coming back to: unpopular opinion: most of what gets said here about discontinuation is guesswork.

Stretched from seven days to ten to twelve over four months. Appetite told me where the limit was each time.

Went back on after eight months away. Nobody here made me feel bad about it, which mattered more than I expected.

Regained most of it over a year and spent that year assuming it was my fault. It was not; it is what the literature describes.

Corrections welcome, especially the pedantic ones. Pedantry is how this board earns its reputation.

Left up. It is honest about the reason for stopping and about the timeline.

Wrote down where I was before changing anything. That single page made the following six months interpretable.

There is very little published guidance on stopping specifically, which is exactly why board consensus here should carry less weight than usual and a clinician conversation should carry more.

The habits are what carried it for a while. When they slipped, everything else followed, in that order.

Yes — have the conversation before rather than after. That is the one piece of process advice this board can give.

Do you have a written baseline from before you started changing anything?

u/osman_eriksen81 points·1 year ago

Has appetite changed yet, independent of the scale?

nobody here can write you a taper schedule

Careful — interval stretching and dose reduction are different interventions and your post uses them interchangeably.

Stretching the interval or reducing the dose?

Is this a pause or a stop? They are different plans.

u/cormac_erdogan82 points·1 year ago

Right, and the habits from the losing phase are the part that has to outlive the dose.

cost and supply are the two most common reasons and both are legitimate

stopping is a plan, not an event

Yes — the withdrawal literature is consistent and it is a pharmacological finding, not a moral one.

What are you planning to watch for, and over what period?

replysharereportpermalink
u/ignacio_silva75 points·1 year ago

Stopped abruptly once and gradually once. The gradual one was easier to interpret because I could see what was changing.

With a week-long half-life, exposure declines over several weeks after the last dose rather than stopping with it. The lag is why the first fortnight is uninformative.

the habits are what has to carry it afterwards

Stopped for cost reasons. Appetite came back at about week 9, well before the scale moved, exactly as this board said it would.

Not convinced. Two weeks of stable weight is not evidence of anything yet.

About c/tapering

Stopping on purpose: dose reduction versus interval stretching, what the discontinuation arms of STEP 1 and SURMOUNT-4 actually showed about regain, appetite return timelines, and the people who came off, regained, and went back on without treating it as a failure.
