[Question] how do you actually verify DEXA
Slightly embarrassed to be asking this, but: how do you actually verify DEXA.
Three scans over eighteen months, same machine, same conditions. Only the third one made the first two interpretable.
On comparing yourself to composition figures from trials.
Published composition data comes from supervised populations with structured protocols, standardised scanning, and analysis populations that have been defined in advance. Your two scans at a local clinic, taken in different states of hydration, are not the same measurement.
Use your own baseline. The question worth asking is whether your own trajectory is going the way you want given what you are actually doing, and the honest answer usually requires measuring protein rather than estimating it and being truthful about training frequency. Neither of those is advice — a programme and a target are things to work out with somebody who knows your history.
How to make a DEXA comparison mean anything.
Same machine, same clinic, same protocol. Same hydration and fasting state, as far as you can manage. At least three to four months apart, because the measurement error is large relative to short-term change. Three scans rather than two, because the first pair cannot distinguish a trend from noise.
Do less than that and you have two numbers with an offset of unknown size, which people then react to by rebuilding a training programme. The free alternative — a few tracked lifts and a monthly waist measurement — is directionally informative, costs nothing, and is far harder to over-interpret.
Happy to answer the boring questions. Those are usually the ones worth asking.
best — the order this archive was captured in
Nothing here is a training or nutrition prescription. Targets and programmes are matters for somebody who knows your history and your training background.
Protein was the whole problem. Appetite dropped and I was eating well under target without noticing for a month.
Protein was the whole problem.
Adding the free proxy — track a few lifts monthly. It costs nothing and it is longitudinal.
Two scans on the same machine 24 months apart. Lean mass held better than I expected and the lifts told the same story for free.
protein and resistance training, that is the entire intervention
protein and resistance training, that is the entire intervention
constipation_club is right that protein becomes a logistics problem when appetite drops.
Tracked grip strength and three lifts monthly. Cheaper than scanning and directionally the same answer.
This. Same machine, same protocol, or the DEXA comparison is measuring the scanner.
This.
Disagreeing with this line: rate alone does not preserve lean mass. The training does.
a single DEXA is a number, two is a comparison, three is a trend
Correction: those scans are from different machines, and the difference you are describing is within the measurement error.
DEXA has a real error margin and people quote it to one decimal
Agreed — protein and resistance training. Everything else in these threads is a rounding error on those two.
the same DEXA machine or it is not a comparison
Retitled — the original claimed a composition change the scans cannot distinguish.
Yes. Lean mass change during weight loss is expected; the useful question is the proportion, not whether it happens.
Retitled — the original claimed a composition change the scans cannot distinguish.
Agreed — and same machine, same conditions, or the two scans are not comparable.
Compared two scans from different clinics and panicked over a difference that was inside the error margin.
Retitled — the original claimed a composition change the scans cannot distinguish.
This is the whole intervention. Protein and resistance training.
Correcting myself upthread: 13 months between scans, not the figure I gave.
Careful, that is a nutrition prescription aimed at another member and this board does not do those.
Yes. Nobody here is prescribing training or nutrition and the good posts say so.
Same DEXA machine both times?
nothing on this board is a training or nutrition prescription
Cosigning that protein gets harder precisely when appetite drops. That is the actual difficulty and it is logistical.
resistance training first, cardio if there is time left
What is protein intake actually looking like, measured rather than estimated?
training volume matters more than training novelty
Small fix — that is fat-free mass, not muscle mass. The scan cannot separate them the way the post assumes.
